Child Marriage is a human rights violation that robs girls of the agency to exercise reproductive rights.

It further affects the realization of their potential and therefore, leads to underdevelopment in areas where it remains prevalent. Together with the Ministry of Chieftaincy & Religious Affairs, UNFPA, the Paramount Chief of the Oguaa Traditional Area, His Majesty Osabarima Kwesi Atta II & the Obaapa Development Foundation, as well as queen mothers and elders, declared an end to child marriage in the community.

They will take concrete steps to ensure the child marriage is eliminated to afford girls the chance to make more meaningful life choices which will be of benefit to them, their families, community and nation at large.

The cultural event to mark the declaration took place at the Eminstimadze Palace in Cape Coast, Central Region.

Promoting Women's Empowerment & Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights (SRHR) through Fashion Design

The Fashion Expressions Project by UNFPA & the Prada Group leverages the social and economic power of fashion as a vehicle to promote women’s empowerment and sexual and reproductive health for young women in Ghana and Kenya.

The program is equipping participants with knowledge and practical skills relevant for the fashion industry and facilitating internships with local fashion companies to establish long-term work opportunities for them. In addition, it seeks to foster a deeper understanding of sexual and reproductive rights and reduce participants’ vulnerability to gendered inequalities and harmful practices. The training pilot launched in May 2022 with two cohorts in Ghana and Kenya made up of young women with a passion for the fashion industry.

The Tamale community were re-assured that Family Planning does not cause menopause as is being speculated. It has come to the knowledge of Health workers that the fear of side effects, rumours, myths and misconceptions were the most frequently cited reasons for the non-use of modern family planning methods while the poor attitudes of health workers and provider bias were also deterrents to utilization. Dr Issah said this during the observation of this year’s Family Planning Week.
