Agnes Addy, a young midwife who hails from Somanya in the Eastern Region of Ghana, graduated from the Bolgatanga Midwifery College in 2013, after her high school education at Aburi Girls’ Senior High School. Agnes loves what she does. According to her, nothing can be compared to the joy and fulfilment she feels when she is able to successfully assist a woman to safely bring a child into the world alive; and this is the secret behind the passion and dedication she attaches to her work. As a result, she is motivated to find innovative ways to handle logistical and social challenges that she faces with regards to her duties. For example, to address the problem of teenage pregnancy which engenders many complications during childbirth, Agnes has liaised with a public health nurse to go around schools and bring sexuality education to young girls.

With support from UNFPA Ghana, Agnes received award for Best Midwife in the Upper East Region in 2018 and till date, she feels very humbled whenever she thinks of and sees her prize. It is an honour which motivates her to keep on working hard. She hopes that this award scheme would be sustained in years to come, in order to incentivize other midwives to dedication and diligence in view of their efforts being appreciated. She calls on her fellow midwives to commit to excellence in their chosen profession, due to the invaluable impact it has on society.
