It was a night of immense inspiration, love and glamour at the 5th annual Ghana Women of the Year Honours held at the Movenpick Ambassador Hotel on Saturday, 26th September,2020.

The brain behind this outstanding annual event is Ms Claudia Lumor. She owns the Kollage Group is the parent company of the GLITZ AFRICA brand; Quarterly publishers of GLITZ AFRICA Magazine and organizers of the annual GLITZAFRICA Fashion Week, Glitz Style Awards, Ghana Women of the Year Honours, SHE Boss, SHE Summit and Glitz Africa Care Foundation. She is also the UNFPA Ambassador for Ghana.

Honourable Frema Osei-Opare, the first female Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, was honoured in the governance category for her leadership in the current government. Receiving the award from the former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, Mrs. Osei-Opare expressed her gratitude to Glitz Africa for the great honour. She admonished women to excel in every opportunity presented to them.

Professor Judge Akua Kuenyehia, the former judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC), was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. In her acceptance speech, she called on women to mentor and support the younger generation in order to collectively build a better country.

Also at the Ghana Women of the Year Honours, Elsie Addo Awadzi, the 2nd Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, was honoured with the Corporate Personality award. The Excellence in Business award was received by Rev Dr. Gifty Akushika Lamptey, the Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of Sidalco Group of Companies .

In addition to the above honourees was Dr. Afua Asabea Asare, CEO of Ghana Exports Promotion Authority, the recipient of the Excellence in Public Service award. The Excellence in Education award went to Professor Rita Dickson, the first female Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

This year’s Ghana Women of the Year Honours also saw Beatrice Agyemang Abbey, Group CEO of Media General; Berla Addadey popularly known as Berla Mundi, a media personality and Nana Ama McBrown, an actress honoured in the Excellence in Media, Young Star, Excellence in Creative Arts categories respectively. 

Ethel Delali Cofie, CEO of EDEL Technology Consult was also honoured in the Excellence in Technology Award while Bozoma Saint John, Chief Marketing Officer for Netflix, in Woman of the Year in the Diaspora category.

 

Ghana Health Service was honoured for Outstanding COVID-19 Response at the event. Presenting the award to GHS, Mr. Niyi Ojuolape, Country Representative of UNFPA underpinned the critical role GHS has been playing in the fight against COVID-19 since the first two cases were reported in March.  Mr. Ojuolape said, frontline health workers, comprising mostly of women, have been instrumental in the COVID-19 response hence the recognition.

Ghana Women of the Year Honours is an annual ceremony which celebrates Ghanaian women making great impacts in their fields of endeavor and also serves as a platform to empower the younger generation, succeed in their chosen fields of work.
