As part of activities to mark this year’s 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence, the Sarfoa Foundation in partnership with the United Nations sensitized the inmates and officers of the female ward of Nsawam Medium Security Prisons.

The occasion was also used to donate boxes of sanitary pads, toiletries and wipes to the inmates by the CEO of the Sarfoa Foundation, Ms. Benedicta Sarfoa Asamoah.  Ms. Asamoah in her remarks encouraged the inmates to prioritize their personal hygiene and skills acquisition to build their capacity in becoming better citizens. She pledged the support of her foundation to fight the stigma and subsequently to make their reintegration to society better.

Mr. Faisal Bawa, a Programme Analyst with UNFPA Ghana, sensitized the inmates and officers on the significance of the 16 days of activism campaign and highlighted some of the issues of gender-based violence. He urged the inmates to come forward and report issues of abuse to the existing structures within the prison. He took both inmates and Officers through how to reach the Orange Support Centre via the toll-free number 0800 111 222.

In the spirit of leaving no one behind and the quest to create a world where there are equal opportunities for all, UNFPA will continue to engage with the marginalized in society to ensure that their Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights needs are met.
