Ghana to observe International Day of the Midwife 2014, tomorrow

Accra, 7 May, 2014- May 5 is the internationally recognized day for highlighting the work of midwives. This is a time to recognise the important work of midwives around the world and show support for the work they do.

In Ghana, this year’s International Day of the Midwife will be observed on Thursday, 8 May under the theme “Midwives changing the world, one family at a time." The event, which will take place at the Goaso Park, Asunafo Municipality, in the Brong Ahafo Region, is being organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service and midwives associations in Ghana. Her Excellency Lordina Mahama, First Lady of Ghana; and Hon Sherry H. Ayittey, Minister of Health are guests for the occasion.

Midwives deliver more than babies: they also provide other life-saving reproductive health information and services, including antenatal, postnatal care and family planning. The occasion will be used to applaud all committed midwives who work beyond the call of duty, most often in difficult circumstances and with limited resources, to provide maternal and newborn care to women and girls in Ghana.

The event shall also see stakeholders reaffirming their pledge to support midwives nationwide, as we work towards the goal of ensuring that every pregnancy is safe and that universal access to sexual and reproductive health services is a reality for all.
